I saw a post on Facebook this morning reminding me to think beyond Santa this Christmas. When we consider our Christmas trees, what are the most important gifts to lay beneath them? Sometimes, we get so wrapped up in the wrapped-up packages that we forget to feel the real magic.

Many years ago, my mom and dad gave my kids a plush Santa whose hand you could press to hear him speak.

“The magic of Christmas lies in our hearts,” his message said.

I truly believe this is true. The most important gifts we can give aren’t wrapped in paper and adorned with ribbons and bows. They are wrapped in words of kindness and acts of service and adorned with expressions of love. They are gifts from our hearts. Yes, there are presents our friends and family members will remember, but what they need most is our presence.

As Christmas quickly approaches, I’m going to spend the next 10 days being mindful (and prayerful) about how I can deepen my commitment to making this season more meaningful. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

P.S. Every year on Christmas Eve, my kids and I listen to A Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, read Luke 2 and read the Tale of the Three Trees. What are some of your favorite traditions?
